30 Day Photography Challenge: Day 12, 13, 14 & 15

Day 12: Sunset

I knew when I started this challenge that as the days went on it might start to get a bit more challenging.  This was because of the natural light available!  It’s that time of the year when the days are getting shorter… the official sunrise is around 7:20am and the sunset around 5:00pm today–but this gap of ‘lighted’ hours is slowly closing!  It’s something that is really fun to live through…but is making some of these photography challenges a bit crazy!  Like on Wednesday I rushed home after work at 5pm… and stepped out on my back porch and was able to catch the sun setting at the end of the Fiord… but almost missed it!  I love this time of year with the mountains covered in snow, often they are shades of pinks… as the sun sets–but no matter how hard I try, it’s almost impossible to capture it with my camera!

Day 13: Myself with 13 Things…

I’ve always liked hats… so this challenge I knew I had to take a photo of me with my ‘winter’ hats!  I counted them and guess what? I had EXACTLY 13… so I pulled out my tripod, set them all up on the coffee table–found things to put under the hats so that they were ‘propped’ up… and then ran back and forth from my camera to ‘hit’ the shutter button and then posed (in different hats…) until I decided that this shot would be the one I would use!  (I so need to get one of those ‘remote’ shutter release things…)

Day 14: Eyes…

Or should I say ‘eye’… I took this shot of my friend’s son…then played with it in the editing…(turned the photo into black& white and then took the B&W away from the eye- but didn’t change the ‘colour’ of his eye at all!).. I absolutely love it the end result!  For some shots, I’ve been really loving a square crop… and I think it suits this photo!  Oliver you have killer baby blues!

Day 15: Silhouette

Today my challenge was to capture a silhouette.  I went out shooting some photos with my friend..but had a bit of difficulty.  The sun was already low in the horizon…but in the end I took this photo of her.  I must admit it’s not the best silhouette I’ve taken, but I do like it with bright blue sky, and sun peaking around behind her body…

So those were my last 4 days… I’ve been enjoying looking at everyone else’s photos from the challenge the list of participants can be found HERE. I’m 1/2 way through the challenge…I’m excited that I’ve been able to follow through on this…and can’t wait to see what will happen in the next 15days!

  1. Seriously! Your photos always look amazing. Can I ask what lens you’re using?

    • Thanks… I have a few lenses in my camera bag. But all the 30-Day Challenge shots have been done with my Canon18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS it’s the lens that is most likely to be on my camera! I got it with my 50D body when I purchased my camera in Feb.’09.

  2. I love how a Santa hat is in your hat collection! I also understand the waning daylight but I have to say I prefer it over trying to fall asleep at night with the sun still high in the sky!

    • I got use to sleeping with the 24hour sunlight when i lived here in 2009… so much so when I moved back to southern Canada I never used curtains in my bedroom! Its totally a unique way to live though–and something neat to experience!

  3. Great photos. Really like the silhouette pic, awesome.

  4. I’m taking after you and starting a hat collection. People at work and our customers love the one I wear but tomorrow I’m hunting for hopefully 3 more… Lol

Also, with the baby blue eyes. I did a shot of my eyes like that one time. And without doing anything to the photo except convert it to B&W and then use the history brush to bring back my eyes, I was amazed at how blue mine are too!
