30 Day Photography Challenge Wrap Up!

Well it’s November 1st…and I’ve officially made my way through the 30 Day Photography Challenge!  Thanks to Our Wired Lives for organizing this challenge… I’ve had a blast, pushed myself to be a bit more creative…and get back behind my camera! The other amazing thing is I’ve found some new blogs, and written by some pretty awesome people…so glad to have a few more on my list to check out!  I honestly can’t believe that the month is done…it just went by so fast!  I suppose what they say is true…time does fly when you are having fun!

I decided get out of my comfort zone..and attempt to put together something with Photoshop.  I’m a bit scared of Photoshop. See I can admit when I’m scared of things! I will admit though I shouldn’t be scared of a computer program. Especially Photoshop you see, I have had a few mini-tutorial/classes back in 2009 I did learn how to do some pretty awesome things. (The only problem was when I opened up Photoshop on my old computer–well it caused my computer to crash–SEE I HAVE A REASON to FEAR this PROGRAM!) I suppose because I had this fear, I never used the program, and I forgot what I learned…fast forward to this spring, I got a new computer!  And I got a copy of Photoshop…but I still rarely open it on my Macbook Pro (perhaps I’m worried Photoshop will crash the new computer?)It’s an irrational fear…one that I need to get over!

But about 2 weeks ago I decided that I might just have to open that program up and try to work with it…

I had this idea I wanted to create a calendar to share all my challenge photos in one spot. I talked to Morena about it (she’s a Photoshop, scrapbooking genius!)…she was like, “You could do that!” So one Friday night I took my computer over to her place…and we sat side by side on her 2 person couch…and I learned how to put my photos into a ‘calendar’, how to create fonts-match colours from the original graphic…and make sure layers are in the right order so they don’t overlapped!  (It was kind of crazy…but I DID IT–and am pretty PROUD of my new SKILLS!) Thanks Morena for helping me realize that Photoshop isn’t so scary!

Here’s my 30 days…

Day 30… October Photography Challenge

Day 30: Self-portrait…

Taken on a walk around town…winter has arrived, who am I kidding..it’s been here for awhile!

It’s been great fun participating in this photography challenge!  I’ve had a blast looking at other’s photos that were participating.  I have found a few new blogs to read which is always fun too!  Because October has 31 days… I’ll be back with one more tomorrow!

30 Day Challenge: Days 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 & 29

Day 24: Animal…

I took a shot of some of the dogs in my neighbourhood…as I was waiting to be picked up to go to the airport!  (I went to the airport 3 times that day–but didn’t end up flying out, because of weather!)

Day 25: Something pink…

I knit this baby kimono sweater this past summer..then popped it into the mail for my friend’s newborn! It does had a little ‘something pink’ for her little girl…I can’t wait to go meet her daughter in person when I’m south on holidays in December…

Day 26: Close-up…

While I was in Iqaluit, I had dinner with friends..and their daughter gave me a manicure and pedicure!  Its been awhile since I’ve had either… this was the ‘first’ coat on my toes…next came BLUE SPARKLES! I love a good make-over!

Day 27: From a distance…

I took this on Friday morning when I was flying back into Pangnirtung from Iqaluit…so decided to take my shot from a distance!  I’m amazed every time I fly up here in the Arctic how vast and amazing this land is… can you see the boat going out to hunt in this photo? (hint: in the bottom right of the photo..really hard to see just a speck!)

Day 28: Flowers…

Well, I went out into my back yard searching for flowers here in the Arctic… I found 3 that were still surviving in the -15C and snow!  Yup, here in the Arctic we make hearty flowers…

Day 29: Black and white…

I love taking B&W photos… I took some courses and learned how to develop and print film…all in B&W, such fun!  I took this photo while I was walking past the harbour to get groceries. The tide was going out, but with all the work that has been happening (dreading of the harbour) to create a deep sea port… but it also means that there is always some water left in the harbour when it’s low tide!  Pangnirtung is in the top 5 for biggest tidal change in the country!

I can’t believe it’s already the end of the month!!!! I’ll post my final photo tomorrow… plus a little wrap up that I’ve been working on!

30 Day Photography Challenge: Day 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20

Day 16: Long Exposure…

Its been a long week!  I’m upset that on Sunday night I didn’t go out and try to catch the northern lights..because they were dancing like crazy!  Instead I tossed and turned trying to sleep…but I didn’t ’til 3am! (Lesson learned I should have gone out to shoot the lights!)  I decided to share my favourite shot from December of 2009 one of my last nights living here…the lights came out and danced for a long time!  More of the photos from that night can be found HERE.

December 20, 2009- Pangnirtung, Nunavut

Day 17: Technology…

Living so far away from family at the top of the world… I am so glad that there is technology.  But I’m also glad for some old fashion things like pen & paper, envelopes & stamps…because something even sweeter in the world is after a 20min walk to the post office…a LETTER waiting for you, when you open up that post office box!

Day 18: Your Shoes…

All this week I’ve been sporting my fantastic rubber boots…they are quite the fashion statement!  But so easy to put on and take off…and they don’t leak!

Day 19: Something orange…

Mmmmm Mango Nectar… so GOOD! I’m so glad I got this on my sealift food order! And well how can you go wrong with a Tigger glass?

Day 20: Bokeh

If you want to learn more about Bokeh you can check out some information HERE.  One of the things I love about living in the north is the amazing artists that can create amazing jewelery out of ivory from tusks and other natural materials.  Let me tell you, my earring collection grew in 2009…and it’s still not complete!  The earrings are Inukshuks and the necklace is an Ulu (woman’s knife).

I wasn’t 100% happy with the Bokeh in the photo above… so wanted to include one of my all time favourite photos that I took last December.  It’s of a friend’s daughter’s toes…I was holding her..and just gently grabbed her foot and snapped the photo with my other hand!

December 2010--Stella's Foot

So those were my last 5 days… I’m having a hard time believing that it’s already the 20th of October!  (is it just me, or has this month FLOWN by?) 10 more days…the best is still yet to come!   Why don’t you have a look at the other participants from the challenge…you can find the list HERE.

30 Day Photography Challenge: Day 12, 13, 14 & 15

Day 12: Sunset

I knew when I started this challenge that as the days went on it might start to get a bit more challenging.  This was because of the natural light available!  It’s that time of the year when the days are getting shorter… the official sunrise is around 7:20am and the sunset around 5:00pm today–but this gap of ‘lighted’ hours is slowly closing!  It’s something that is really fun to live through…but is making some of these photography challenges a bit crazy!  Like on Wednesday I rushed home after work at 5pm… and stepped out on my back porch and was able to catch the sun setting at the end of the Fiord… but almost missed it!  I love this time of year with the mountains covered in snow, often they are shades of pinks… as the sun sets–but no matter how hard I try, it’s almost impossible to capture it with my camera!

Day 13: Myself with 13 Things…

I’ve always liked hats… so this challenge I knew I had to take a photo of me with my ‘winter’ hats!  I counted them and guess what? I had EXACTLY 13… so I pulled out my tripod, set them all up on the coffee table–found things to put under the hats so that they were ‘propped’ up… and then ran back and forth from my camera to ‘hit’ the shutter button and then posed (in different hats…) until I decided that this shot would be the one I would use!  (I so need to get one of those ‘remote’ shutter release things…)

Day 14: Eyes…

Or should I say ‘eye’… I took this shot of my friend’s son…then played with it in the editing…(turned the photo into black& white and then took the B&W away from the eye- but didn’t change the ‘colour’ of his eye at all!).. I absolutely love it the end result!  For some shots, I’ve been really loving a square crop… and I think it suits this photo!  Oliver you have killer baby blues!

Day 15: Silhouette

Today my challenge was to capture a silhouette.  I went out shooting some photos with my friend..but had a bit of difficulty.  The sun was already low in the horizon…but in the end I took this photo of her.  I must admit it’s not the best silhouette I’ve taken, but I do like it with bright blue sky, and sun peaking around behind her body…

So those were my last 4 days… I’ve been enjoying looking at everyone else’s photos from the challenge the list of participants can be found HERE. I’m 1/2 way through the challenge…I’m excited that I’ve been able to follow through on this…and can’t wait to see what will happen in the next 15days!
