>Un-Expected Traveling…

>It’s really interesting to me how things happen… some might call it destiny, others being in the right spot at the right time, and others just plain lucky!  About 2 weeks ago, I woke up at my mum’s house… checked my Facebook… (on my iPhone)… and got this email from a good friend!  He works at Opportunity International Canada. This organization is all about micro finance.  Basically, well my understanding of it is,…  helps people in the third world, access small business loans so that they can jump start local economyfrom the bottom up… (here is some more information about that!) My friend was going on a trip to Columbia.. to visit some of the clients, and check out micro fiance and how it works.

Ok, so back to the email…. my friend explained that there was a trip upcoming to Columbia… and he was wondering if I could come along and be the ..photographer… (I was very excited!!).  You might ask? why did he think of me? Well in early July I had stopped by their house… and  hung out with his wife (also my friend).. and their adorable little girl who was 7 months… and shot a bunch of portraits…. when I dropped them off at their house… I had a conversation with him and basically said something like this: ” you need to be BRUTALLY honest.. as a parent would you pay for a product like this? Like if they are GOOD or NOT” (apparently I have confidence issues….) And his response was to offer me a trip to Columbia to take photos for the YAO Columbia trip!  (to be used in print materials, websites etc…)

So I suppose that’s how I find myself on the night before I fly to Columbia for 4 days… I’m pretty stoked… I’ve never been to South America… and well to be able to do a photography gig internationally, well that’s even more exciting… I also am excited for what I will see… and hopefully it might add some perspective to my life, and what I might think are crazy struggles in my life.. but in the grand scheme of it… aren’t that big of issues!!

If you want to follow along…YAO’s First Insight Trip to Arjona, Colombia, click on the link!

I’ll be posting photos when I get back to Canada….at some point…as after I land, I’m starting to drive back to the ‘peg… but this time I’ll have an accomplice!!

>Tinker Town…

Tonight, Ryan and I headed to ‘Tinkertown’… what a fun kiddie carnival type place… it’s free to go in…but you pay for the rides etc… the colours were great.. and there was some ‘interesting’ stuff in there to shoot!!
A train goes around the ‘outside’ of the property… (if I was 4 I’d LOVE this place!!!)
There’s a GIANT lemon?! seriously… who doesn’t love a LEMON where you can get drinks from!?
But don’t forget the UPSIDE down ICE CREAM cone.. (where u can get ICE CREAM!?)…
Or the ‘crazy’ signs telling parents and kids what they CAN and CAN’T do!!!
The rides… yep I know it’s completely over-exposed..but I LOVE it!! 🙂
and then there was the ‘creepy’ clown.. who doesn’t love a ‘creepy’ clown!?
And I had to get my photo taken with ‘said’ creepy clown!! (thanks Ryan for taking this little gem!)
…and here’s a new self-portrait with a new wide angle lens I aquired this evening!! 😉
gotta luv those self-portraits.. well I do anyways!!

Well that’s the word on the street tonight… bags are packed… I’m ready to go… I think Milo is good too.. full tank of gas, topped up the bug spray juice and lots of oil!! 😉 Talk to you next from the road… I’m out of here!! 🙂

>Happy Canada Day!!

>Today when I stepped out of my air conditioned apartment… I had a flash back to my Canada Day last year.  I was living in Pangnirtung, Nunavut (on Baffin Island)..and I had to return home to put on my long johns because I was so cold!  If you want to hear about that Canada Day click the following links.. PART 1, PART 2, and PART 3!  I would have liked to experience a bit of those ‘chilly’ winds…it was HOT, here and I was instantly sweating when I started walking around, first exploring the street festival on Osbourne and then walking over to the Forks…

It always amazes me the outfits, and Canadians wear on Canada day to celebrate.. it’s awesome…. I happened to snap a few of my favs from the day!  I am always amazed how the old and young…come out to party! I think all the cheesy ‘Canadiana’ clothing, bags, hats, come out for one day a year… kind of makes me wish Canada Day could happen more often!  It’s such a good feeling to be a Canadian and celebrate with fellow Canadians… So before I start writing a novel, I’m going to leave you with my photos…. and little commentary on them!

One of the many bands that played!…
Mmmmm it sure was ‘patio’ weather today!
(the next two photos were taken by my friend Ryan–thanks mate!)
Enjoying the ‘eye-candy’ it was a toss up what was hotter..
the weather or the ‘eye-candy’ standing/sitting behind me! (taken using my iPhone)
As the sun went down… I continued to talk to my friend.. and take photos…
Good Night Sun….
(side note: now just to let you know, I didn’t bring my tripod–so that means I hand held my camera for all the shots that follow in this blog…. and am aware that there is some ‘camera’ shake..and well blur.. but I decided to embrace it and see what I could come up with..and I was surprised to get some neat stuff… I do want to shoot fireworks with a tripod at some point in my life tho! )
It was awesome to enjoy the music.. the Winnipeg Symphony played… and was joined by a band for the last few numbers…
(side note:  It was almost perfect.. after returning from a washroom break.. a family moved to sit close to where I was sitting, as I joined my friend… This family…who was behind me who kept kicking me, even though I moved to give them more room–the kids wonderful parents ‘instructed’ the kids to kick/bump me because then I’d move.. I did as much as I could, and didn’t fight.. but seriously can’t believe some people’s parents–who in their right mind tells their small children to bump the lady to get her to move?!)
I luv, this shot!
There was a HUGE crowd of people… that kept growing…
The fireworks started… but we were in a spot that couldn’t see them very well… (they were being set off from behind us, and two tall buildings in our way…) we watched some, then decided to start moving to get a better view!..(and my friend wanted to ‘beat’ the crowd….and I needed to know the direction on how to ‘walk’ to get out of there the fastest…I came a different route that was FULL of people!)
Yes, that’s the “Inn at the Forks” hotel.. and that’s the sign on top of the hotel….
After pointing me in the right direction, my friend left…which was totally cool…and I stayed in the parking lot and got these last shots of the fireworks!
Happy Canada Day! I hope everyone had a fantastic day…
one more thing to leave you with….
a little video of a song that’s been in my head all day!

>A Night at the Races…

Tonight after work I went out to the Assiniboia Downs Race Track.  My friend B’s boyfriend’s family has horses.  So that meant I got to go into the barns, and visit some of the horses, before the race.  I felt like a 10 year old girl–all giddy with excitement at seeing horses.  Ok, so maybe that’s taking it a bit far.. but I kept saying “this is so exciting!” (and people well they looked at me like I was nuts!?)… I didn’t grow up around horses… I went to a summer camp and got to ride horses two summers, and have ridden a handful of times other places!  Ok.. so was was I saying? Yes, I was in heaven.. It was the PERFECT way to KICK off my HOLIDAYS! (yep that’s right… I finished my last day today!)
Ahhhhh, they are sooo beautiful!!!
After letting them smell me, finally I was able to pet some of them…
This girl was really liked her photo taken!
(the others hid…even after I figured out how to turn off my ‘beeps!’ my camera gives out!)
What can you say? Horses are pretty niffty animals!!
My kind of place… (with a sign like this!)
–well actually I’m planning to start my running/walk program again this summer…
…a handful of feed..
Apparently even wheelbarrows need license plates!
After a quick bit to eat, my friend and I went down to the ‘grand stand’… to see what happens! I saw a total of 8 races… and the following are photos from those races!
…on the final stretch..(guy I know I need to work on my ‘horse’ lingo..!)
…a photo finish!
In the winner’s circle!!!
So, I did place a bet…(I was at a race track after all!) I placed my bet in the 7th Race, I placed a $2 bet ‘across the board’ (which meant if the horse got in 1st, 2nd or 3rd I’d win) on my friend’s horse.  In addition to this, I placed a $2 on the horse favoured to win! (so for those of you counting…that’s an $8 bet..yep I’m a heavy hitter…and bet big!) GUESS what!? My horses won… The horse that was favoured to win–WON! and my friend’s horse came in 2nd…so I won get this.. $9.20 Yep.. a total winnings of $1.20…don’t worry I won’t spend it all in the same place!!!
Here I am with my ‘winning’ tickets… with the ‘pink’ horse, in the background!!
While the horses were being shown before the race.. I LOVED the night sky with the clouds… was crazy windy, some of the horses got a bit crazy…even though it’s a tad blurry.. I like it!
For the last race, my friend and I went up into the ‘grand’stand on the outdoor section… it was pretty neat to get a cool view of the track… and I got some last ‘fun’ photos…. While I was waiting for the race to start… I did a self-portrait.. because there’s always time for that!
…the track…
..the horses heading to the start-gate… the final stretch
..this race was definitely a photo finish!! A great last one to see!!
Coolin’ down… coming back after the race… (and I think one of my fav shots of the night!)
Assinaboine Downs… thank you for not disapointing…
Thanks  B.  for inviting me to spend a night at the race track!! I truly had a blast, It was great hanging out with you, taking photos…and seeing a part of your life!! Thanks again to you, and your boyfriend’s family… for making this happen!!!

>Brought to you by the letter M…

>FOR mosquitoes..(or mozzie)..or pain in my FLESH! Can you see how many are on my legs? YIKES! I am also aware that this post has a crazy amount of photos…sometimes it’s just like that…

We ended up tonight at Kildonan Park.. pretty cool spot… next time I’m taking bug spray!

We headed to a more ‘open’ area… to see what we could see, the sun was in a perfect spot.. to get some awesome shadow shots!

Why, HELLO shadow!! How are you today!?

Moss, on a Tree.. just hanging out…. (I was still complaining about the Mozzies at this point!)

So, I continued on with my ‘portrait’ session with Ryan from last week… I’m so excited… and am starting to seriously think about building my portfolio this summer, in order to start some sort of buisness…  Ryan was happy to be the model for me! I was pretty excited with the end result.  I hope Ryan you are also pleased!  (PS. there are a few that won’t make the blog but still are goodies! 😉
A close-up of Lucille…
A few nights ago, I had this brainstorm… to get a shot of Ryan through Lucille’s view finder.. and well it worked!!! So like this shot!!! (except for the sun glare… perhaps a bit of photo shopping can get that out?)
I’m not one to ‘promote’ habits…but I do luv this shot!!
Lucille with her other friend ‘Larry’ the light meter (trust me folks I didn’t name them!)
Strike a pose…
Throw in a little silhouette action.. and it’s priceless!….

The story behind this one is… Ryan kept moving bc of the mozzies on his legs… but I coudln’t get the shot in focus… But in the end it’s a kind of cool effect!

Sometimes photographers have to go to ALL lengths to get the shot… that means sometimes climbing a tree!

Ryan patiently waiting for me to pass up “Lucille”…

Getting that shot…
I couldn’t decide between the following two images.. so decided to include both of them!
Got to luv the silhouette!!!
I luv Ryan’s face… it’s like.. are you SURE you can take Lucille without BREAKING her… LOL
So that’s it for my portraits… (there are a few more Ryan…and I’ll get that CD for you soon!)… I’ll leave you with two more images from the night… I’m so in love with these flowers…
And who doesn’t love a rose!!
One more sleep, one more day at work and then I’m on vacation…

I have some exciting plans tomorrow night… I can’t wait to post the photos from that adventure!!!
